More about The Dragons of Cora and the Nurse Dragon

Cora and the Nurse Dragon takes place on an alternate version of earth where dragons exist but have become a resource exploited by humans rather than a wild species. In fact, at the start of the story, they have been extinct in the wild for several decades.

Dragon breeding is also illegal outside of DRA (Dragon Regulatory Agency) approved facilities, most
owned by a small group of corporations, most notably Algernon Investments. The two classes of dragons needed for breeding--queen and drake dragons--are illegal to possess as private citizens.

Similar to ants and bees, wild dragons live in colonies with a single queen, who is the mother of all the colony’s dragons. Each class has its own purpose, both within the colony and the eco-system around the colony. Dragons are omnivores. As well as fruit, they commonly dine on plant nectar and encourage the growth of plants around their colonies.

Short-lived, tiny mayfly dragons are pollinators, keeping the area around colonies lush. They also provide a food source for many larger species who in turn become prey for the larger dragons. Mostly green, with some rare color variations, mayflies eat nectar and insects.

The next tier of dragons consists of the “cat-sized” dragons. The comparison to cats came about because these dragons are the most likely to be kept as pets. They are playful, generally docile, and stockily built, with short front legs, bird-like hind legs, and small wings. They are capable of flight only over short distances. However, they are voracious hunters. Cat-sized dragons, like their feline counterparts, can catch small birds, lizards, and rodents, and are responsible for providing food for the colony, especially hatchlings who are too young to hunt. The most common colors for cat-sized dragons are red, yellow, and blue, but green and purple varieties have been documented.

The next dragon class, called the sentinels, are colloquially referred to as “racers,” a term that is gaining popularity in more modern classification guides. With the die-out of wild colonies, their original purpose has been forgotten, and most now know them exclusively for their speed and ability to carry human riders.

They are roughly the size of horses, but with elongated bodies, short legs, and four butterfly like wings. In the wild, they were the protectors of their colonies, standing guard and occasionally bringing in larger game for the queen to eat. They are similar in coloring to their cat-sized counterparts.

Drakes are the drones of the dragon world. Even the largest colonies rarely produce more than a handful of drakes, for their primary purpose is breeding. However, as the second largest class of dragon, smaller only than the majestic queens, and commonly growing to as long as thirty feet, they are fearsome. territorial hunters. They often aid the sentinels in protecting the colony. Fast fliers, but more muscular than the racers, drakes range in color from dark gray to jet black. When a large number of drakes are produced, it is often a sign that the colony is about to split and a new queen will be born, leading a portion of the dragons to a new, less crowded home.

The DRA considers drakes too dangerous to keep in large numbers, even in authorized facilities, and most are euthanized at hatching, leaving queens to be artificially inseminated.

Queens are the largest dragons, living to be a century old and growing up to a hundred feet in length. Larger dragons have been reported, but no evidence has been presented outside of eyewitness accounts.

Queens have flashy, reflective scales, reminiscent of diamonds. Though their primary purpose is breeding, they maintain their strength and agility throughout their lives, and it is said there is no sight as terrible or awe-inspiring as a queen in battle for her colony. While a queen is essential for the function of a breeding facility, they are usually kept heavily sedated due to their power and intractability.

And then there are nurse dragons, rare dragons, considered by most experts to be extinct. What is the purpose of the nurse dragon? Well, you’ll just have to read Cora and the Nurse Dragon to find out.

When Samantha starts experiencing strange changes within her, she realizes her captor may have left her more damaged than she originally thought. Now she must turn to Blake for help in order to unearth the truth behind the monster who started this all... or risk experiencing worse things than just falling in love.

Born in Dekalb, Illinois, Amanda Strong has called Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia and now New Mexico home. Amanda has been spinning tales since she was a child. Her family still remembers finding young Amanda with her bright pink glasses, hiding in random corners of the house while scribbling away in one of her many spiral-bound notebooks. You could say that some things never change since Amanda is still writing today. Amanda began her writing career when she uploaded The Awakener, her first full-length novel, on Wattpad where it received over 430,000 reads in four weeks. She was blown away and humbled by the reader support and feedback she received. Because of The Awakener's success as a non-published book, she was asked to talk on 1400 KSTAR about her story.
In September 2013 Amanda Strong signed with Clean Teen Publishing for publication of The Awakener, which is scheduled to release in late October of this year. The Awakener is the first book in an all-new young adult paranormal romance series called: The Watchers of Men.
When Amanda isn't writing, you can find her chasing her three rambunctious children around the house and spending time with her wonderful and supportive husband. On some occasions you can still find Amanda with her not-so-pink glasses, hiding in a corner reading her favorite young adult fantasy novels or working out only to blow her diet by eating ice cream.

Cool!!!! Enjoyed the book very much. Some of the scenes had me holding my breath... it was intense like anything can happen. And shouldn't let my guard down along with characters. I loved Karas then the sunshine personality of Cassi.
Just at some things I couldn't connect Karas when she compared things form her past life and what she was seeing or been told in present. Cuz I didn't get to know Karas and others what their lives where there. So I couldn't connect with that part.
But enjoyed the book and look forward for the next one. This book do stand alone and I felt it to be one but the stalker (a safe one) of authors I saw there is second one being WIP so cool!! Looking forward for it!

About the Author

AnnChristy2014SuperSmallI’m a recently retired Navy Commander and secret science fiction writer. Since retiring, I work on my books as obsessively as I worked for the military and I still can’t figure out what I should wear if I can’t wear a uniform. I live by the sea under the benevolent rule of my canine overlords and a variety of unruly family members.
My first published series, Silo 49, cemented my desire to write fiction and it’s paved the way for a whole slew of new books. Strikers, Yankari: A Talking Earth Tale, The In-Betweener as well as a bunch of creepy (or creepily-cool) stories in published anthologies have already come out. And there is so much more to come.
I love to hear from readers so drop me a line! (No, really, I’m not even just saying that to be nice. I really do love to hear from readers!)
